met gala soft launch & current obsessions
TGIF to all who celebrate <3 the weather in NYC has finally turned & I’ve rediscovered the meaning of it all. jk jk but only kind of - Leandra Medine Cohen actually said it so much better than I ever could!
Besides all of the gratitude I’m feeling for this amazing weather & all the gorgeous blooms that come with it, I’m also constantly thinking about the upcoming Met Gala (first Monday in May!!!) My brain just equates spring in New York with this event. I’ve been here for 12 MAYs (?!) and I’ve gone to every single exhibition at the Met. If you thought I’d say I’ve been to every single Met Gala l0l no I wish. I did work for a fashion company who bought a table for a bit & that was a whole thing. Anyways tales for another time.
What I wanted to get into is why I think, after years of a fairly stale event, this year will be THE year of the met gala. I’m predicting something akin to Heavenly Bodies or CAMP.
First things first, the theme of the exhibition is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”Per Vogue they have said:
‘Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition is organized into 12 sections, each representing a characteristic that defines dandy style: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism.’
Now the dress code and the theme are technically different, but always intertwined. This year’s will be “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting that’s sure to bring out the sartorial creativity of this year’s attendees.
So we’re already off to a great start because both the theme and dress code have a clear, well defined vision - something you couldn’t say for the last few events.
Next up let’s talk about who is hosting - I don’t honestly know what these celebrity hosts do, but I do know it means they are CONFIRMED guests that will be attending lol & that’s really all I care about. The hosts are honestly all extremely cool & know how to dress so I’m sure we’ll be impressed. I have no idea who helped Anna Wintour craft this list, but I’m sure she sought outside council because her track record would suggest she didn’t do this alone.
Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams are all co-chairs, while LeBron James is serving as honorary chair. Again IDK why LeBron is honorary - maybe he won’t be there but helped out (with whatever mystery duties these guys have.) IMO their purpose is to hype the event and make sure it ends up looking cool. Feel free to let me know if that is wrong.
Outside of the co-chairs there’s also a host committee - againnnnn I have no idea what these people do but I imagine they are also CONFIRMED to be attending!!! So let’s go through more of these attendees - Tyla, Ayo Edebiri, Dapper Dan, Janelle Monáe, Spike Lee and Doechii (which I already did an entire TGIF on her PFW style so I cannot wait to see who is dressing her for this) !!
OK so we LITERALLY don’t even need anyone else to attend and this would potentially be the best Met Gala because all of these people are extremely fashionable & in case you needed proof, Vogue said we got you.
They dropped multiple covers in anticipation of the met gala, featuring Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky & Lewis Hamilton. (guys Asap with the Dalmatians like I can’t!)
&& I know everyone on here hates Instagr*m but they’ve been steadily dropping content. Like the below which has so many people I adore & is styled by Law Roach!!! Which remember when he said he would retire lol…
The last thing I’ll share is this amazing video of Colman talking about Anna Wintour approving his look. I will obviously recap all of the looks from the Met Gala as well but we still have some time before that happens.
&&& if you still have time I do have a small list of current obsessions this week. These are all the things that have brought me joy.
Lemme Say This pod — I love this pod in general but I listened to ‘the mess express’ episode this week after wrapping up The Pitt & when I tell you I laughed out loud when Hunter Harris & Peyton were discussing Mateo. If you’ve seen The Pitt 10/10 put this episode on next.
Horse Sport: I bought the entire kit (& the LONG short too)! It’s expensive, so please don’t kill me. First I love this brand because the mission and vision is extremely clear and it’s what I’ve been looking for for so long. Everything is made from natural materials (cotton) and there is no brand logos. I’m sorry but I cannot go to one more work out class and stare at a room full of ALO printed on the side of people’s legs. Why are we paying to advertise for brands? Anyways I just received all of my things and they fit perfectly + feel absolutely amazing. I’m not kidding when I say I want to live in these. I know it’s a splurge so if you’re picking ONE item only I’d probably get the sweatshirt. Even if you don’t want to drop any $$ on this I’d recommend checking out the site as the branding is excellent 👌
