'it's curtains on social media' & other highlights from the week
Welcome to TGIF. I’m showing my age, but if you are a true millennial you will remember ABC’s TGIF series which played nonsensical 30 minute kid comedies I loved (think Sabrina the Teenage Witch & Boy Meets World to name a few). Let’s think of this as the grown up version of that - a week in review of what’s happening in the pop culture space, as well as some of my own picks thrown in because why not? A place of escapism where you can veg out & have some fun.
What’s going on with social media: A LOT & nothing all at once.
The tech bros are all in on Trump ($1m each to his inauguration - we’re in the ‘pay to play’ stage of capitalism now)
Zuck (which hilariously keeps autocorrecting to Suck) admitted they will be using AI to generate accounts & get more ‘engagement’ plus he doesn’t think the world is masculine enough
TikTok - everyone’s favorite app - will actually be banned by Monday. The government is scrambling to figure out how to keep it alive now that TT has called their bluff & hasn’t sold to a US company
Rednote - maybe this is actually everyone’s favorite app now - a Chinese app similar to TikTok has taken off in the US & the two countries are really having at it with the jokes about each other
All to say Las Culturistas said it this week ‘it’s curtains on social media’ & I’d have to agree - too many apps are cesspools of junk & we’re banning all the others. At least we have this platform - for now
Movies are the best they’ve been in a long time: Las Culturistas also chatted about movies this week so thank you for this inspo
The Substance is my favorite movie in 2024 & I highly encourage you to go watch it if you haven’t seen it. It’s camp in the most perfect sense & it’s not a pop out & scare you kind of horror either. It’s more a ‘hey this is actually what it’s like to be a woman…’ kind of horror ya know?
Babygirl is also a top contender for movie of the year in my opinion. Nicole Kidman (or Nikki Kid as she’s lovingly called in my house) gives an amazing performance & generally it’s not a movie with a plot you’ve seen before. I love, love, love when we get something new from a movie.
Last but not least I’m sure you’ve heard of ‘A Complete Unknown’ - the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothee Chalamet. It’s rumored Bob Dylan will join him as he’s set to be the host & musical guest of SNL this weekend. Bob even made a TikTok account - clearly no one on his team had the guts to tell him it’s a bit late - which I assume is meant to promote this gig.
This brings me to our fashion segment: Timothee Chalamet in Paris, what is a babygirl & are we over ‘quiet luxury’ — stick with me!
Timothee Chalamet has been giving us quite the fashion over in Paris promoting ‘A Complete Unknown.’ One twitter user accurately described his inspiration as Ashley Tisdale & I think that’s spot on. Of course if you’ve been on social media in the past year we’ve decided to call this style ‘babygirl’ - the Chanel bag & pink scarf really seal the deal on that one.

I just know he took that Chanel from Kylie However I think the popularity of Timmy & his recent style as well as my absolute favorite THE Addison Rae says something different. Like sure ‘babygirl’ can be a thing but I think this says the ‘quiet luxury’ & the ‘clean girl’ aesthetic are done. They are too boring, too bland. We need fun in our lives right now - why not let it be with fashion?
We’ll close out with a health & wellness pick of the week: if you know me you know what I’m going to say
Pilates - of course! But I have a few suggestions. I’m NYC based & these are the studios I love that also offer online programs. These classes are hard but worth it. For me pilates is less about working out & more about moving my body in a mindful way that I can take with me outside of class. My 3 favorites are Forma, Tera & B the Method - all of which you can do in the comfort of your own home. All have different offerings & I mix it up depending on what I need that day.
